Charlamagne tha God recently published his second book “Shook One: Anxiety Playing Tricks on Me.” In it, he relates his own struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. He is clear that the majority of this was the direct result of the many fights he has been involved in. His title is a play on the Geto Boys’ song title, “Mind Playing Tricks on Me.” The song is all about anxiety. This resonated with him because of his own anxiety issues, for which he sought therapy when he was 39. He has since journeyed on a path to learn from his many past mistakes.
He also discusses at some length the #MeToo movement and how it is a clear indicator of how men must shape up in their treatment of women. In current discussions about book, he has also touched on controversial actions and words by various sports figures.
Charlamagne’s birth name is Lenard Larry McKelvey. He was born in 1978 and began selling drugs as a teenager. He currently serves as an American radio presenter and television personality. After he was arrested for the third time, his parents let him sit in jail and didn’t post bai for 41 days. After finally getting out jail, he started attending night classes, eventually becoming a radio intern. It was during these early years in radio that he developed the stage name, Charlamagne Tha God. He started hosting the radio show, The Breakfast Club, in 2010.
In 2011 he also entered the television arena by joining the cast of the comedy show, The Guy Code. He has also played on the MTV2 show Charlamagne & Friends. In 2013 he co-hosted MTV New Year’s live from Times Square. He also the narrator of the BET Show, Inside the Label. In 2017 his wrote his first book Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It.
